Sueme

Michael Whelan

Since 1980, Michael Whelan has been one of the world's premier fantasy and science fiction artists. He is currently working full time on his fine art paintings, but in the past three decades he has created more than 350 book and album covers for authors and artists like Isaac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen King, the Jacksons, Sepultura, and MeatLoaf. His clients have included every major U.S. book publisher in addition to such diverse companies as National Geographic, Roadrunner Records, and The Franklin Mint.

A graduate of San Jose State University with a BA in Painting and a President's Scholar, Michael Whelan went on to attend the prestigious Art Center College of Design also in California, but he dropped out to accept his first book cover assignment. The most honored artist in his field, Whelan has won an unprecedented 15 Hugo Awards (Science Fiction's Oscar), 3 World Fantasy Awards, and the SuperHugo as the Best Artist of the last 50 years. This year he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame as the first living artist to be named to the small but highly distinguished company, which includes such luminaries as H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury, Steven Spielberg, Rod Serling, and Ursula K. Le Guin. The readers of LOCUS magazine (for SF insiders) have named him Best Professional Artist 27 times in their annual poll, including 2009. In addition to countless Best of Show and Best Artist Awards from SF and Fantasy conventions and regional art shows, Michael was named a Grand Master by the Spectrum Annual of the Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. His other awards include a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, a Vargas Award, and a Grumbacher Gold Medal.

Michael has had 4 art books published as well as numerous limited edition prints, posters, calendars, and licensed products such as greeting cards, t-shirts and sculptures. He is a member of the Graphic Artists Guild and the Society of Illustrators in New York City, and he is an Adviser to the Masters in Fine Arts program at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Connecticut.

The stunning color and composition of Michael Whelan's illustrations and his dedication to bringing an author's words to life have brought him fans throughout the world. Now that he is devoting all his time to his own visions, he has found many new collectors in the fine art world. His "gallery" paintings of his personal work are still infused with his signature "sense of wonder," but they are rich in symbolism and offer many layers of meaning to be explored.

Jason Vivona

Jason Vivona currently resides in Santa Rosa, CA. He concentrates on creating visual art and music as well as serving as Art Director for WE RIDE AT NIGHT, an art/skateboard company that produces collaborative works with other artists in the form of limited edition skateboards and clothing. Also, Vivona currates WE RIDE AT NIGHT's quarterly group exhibition that showcases the artists that the company collaborates with.

His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States, Japan and Mexico, such as 111 MINNA in SF, The Museum of New Art in Detroit,New Accident Gallery (Japan), and Vitale Gallery in Florida to name a few. Although mainly in group exhibitions, his work has been featured solo at Syracuse University and Homestar Modern in Portland, OR. among others.

Vivona's work has been published in Juxtapoz, Transworld Skateboarding, WARP, DIW, Skyscraper, RELAX, Portland FunBook 3 and many more.

His newest work is constructed much like that of the abstract expressionists, where a mark is made, and the following mark is a reaction to the initial mark and so on. Vivona, in a sense, abstractly applies an extensive vocabulary of initially identifiable visual elements to create an ever-evolving narrative within the piece. The end result being a completely cohesive, realized quilted image, often laced with curtural reference and satirism.

Vivona directs a portion of his energy to freelance design. In the past he's worked for such companies as Consolidated Skateboards, Fuel TV, Arena Rock Recording Co., Innes Clothing, and Converse. Currently he is producing work for Nike 6.0, Volcom, and Drop City Productions acting as art director and character/set designer for new animated commercials and television programs, partnering up with Adult Swim alum and director of photography, Jeffrey Gardner and writer/photographer, Tod Brilliant.

Noma Bar

Fantastic artwork by illustrator Noma Bar. He employs a technique based on negative space. The visual effect is amazing as the message matches the picture's illusion and appears suddenly. Through its minimalist designs, Noma Bar tackles social themes such as nuclear, crime, and capitalist greed. Born in Israel in 1973, he studied graphic design and typography at the Jerusalem Academy of Art & Design. He has been based in London since 2001. In 2003, Bar received his first national magazine commission from Time Out London, and since then he has worked for an array of media clients, including the BBC, Random House, The Observer, The Economist and Wallpaper.

Wojtek Siudmak
